305 beds threatened according to a collective

The Grand Paris-Nord university hospital campus project, planned for 2028 in Saint-Ouen to replace the Bichat hospitals in Paris and Beaujon in Clichy in the Hauts-de-Seine, has been declared of public utility by the Seine prefecture. -St Denis.

With a capacity of 900 beds, the future Grand Paris-Nord hospital will be spread over 7.2 hectares, on the site of a former PSA factory, in Saint-Ouen.

It is to replace the current Bichat and Beaujon hospitals and will also house the teaching and research activities of the University of Paris.

The future hospital “will not be equivalent since 305 beds for medicine, surgery and obstetrics will disappear from the living area of northern Paris” in full demographic expansion, had denounced the collective “Not that, not there, not like that” and the defense committee of Bichat and Beaujon last January.

“We cannot combine two hospitals and reduce the supply of care”, explains Samira, nurse and CGT union representative at Bichat hospital. “The figures given by the AP-HP are less than 300 beds, a figure also confirmed by a letter from the cabinet of the President of the Republic”she says.

The nurse also regrets that the information is disseminated drop by drop. “We learned last week that the hepato-gastro department would see, in the new hospital, its number of beds reduced by half, so if you have a digestive haemorrhage, we may not be able to take care of you”she laments.

In France, the hospital has lost 6,000 beds in recent years.

“In recent years, we have lost nearly 6,000 beds in France, so when we see the difficulty of access to care, it is just not understandable to reduce this offer”.

A new mobilization against the closure of these public health establishments was held on Tuesday in front of the Bichat hospital.

A petition against the project also collected more than 1000 signatures. Opponents castigate the location of the project, in the center of Saint-Ouen, which would cause traffic problems and nuisances for residents.

The green light from the prefecture comes after a public inquiry and the opinion of the commission of inquiry. The latter gave a favorable opinion while pointing out three “reserves” : maintain an overall capacity equivalent to that of the two existing hospitals, ensure access conditions and maintain a maternity service.
