30 jobs away: Fretz Men is one of the last shoe factories to close its production – Lenzburg – Aargau

The Fretz company is one of the big traditional brands in the Swiss shoe industry. Production started in Aarau in 1903. In 1985 the manufacture of women’s shoes there was discontinued. From then on, the company focused on men’s shoes. The Fretz Men AG company was founded in 1965. Headquarter is Fahrwangen, for a while the company was also present in Seon.

Fretz Men currently employs around 50 people in Fahrwangen. The company is one of the last larger shoe factories in Switzerland and still produces around 200,000 pairs a year. Fretz Men has a reputation for being one of the most competent men’s shoe suppliers with Gore-Tex technology.

But that was obviously not enough for Swiss production to survive.

, it says in a media release distributed on Monday. «We have invested in the location for many years. Unfortunately, production in Switzerland has been very deficient for some years, »explains Vinzenz Lauterburg. He has been managing director since January and is one of the shareholders of the family company.

Vinzenz Lauterburg took over the management of the Fretz Men from Daniel Omlin in early 2020.

Lauterburg goes on to say: “In order to be able to invest in the future of the company, we have to make the best possible use of our resources in view of the tougher competitive situation. That is why we are now facing the painful decision to outsource most of our production to partners abroad. » To partners in Europe and Asia who, according to the media release, «guarantee the high standards in terms of quality and sustainability for which Fretz has stood for over a hundred years»

“Fair solutions for employees”

Consultations will clarify exactly how many jobs in Fahrwangen will be cut by the end of July. The media release speaks of up to 30 positions. The shareholders promise “a comprehensive voluntary social plan”. Lauterburg says: “We will find fair solutions for our employees.”

Around 15 employees in administration, development and sales will still work in Fahrwangen in the future. In Switzerland, Fretz will continue to operate a studio in which the company develops new shoe models and tests their production. Small runs for various premium brands will continue to be produced in the Seetal in the future. “Our main focus is on developing Fretz’s design further and opening up new ones in addition to the existing sales markets,” emphasizes Lauterburg. With the new direction, his family is clearly committed to the company and its successful future as a strong partner to the trade.

Almost all management replaced

Vinzenz Lauterburg took over the management of Fretz Men at the beginning of 2020 from Daniel Omlin, who led the company for over 12 years. The Aarau business lawyer Jürg Schärer was Chairman of the Board of Fretz Men AG for over 30 years. He handed over to Kaspar Hemmeler in autumn 2018.

At the beginning of the year, not only Vinzenz Lauterburg joined the company as the new boss. Virtually the entire management team was replaced. “With Steffen Fredslund as Head of Sales and Torsten Kunz as Head of Collection, we managed to attract two very experienced managers,” says Lauterburg. “Both have a strong track record in the shoe and fashion industry.”
