3 Reasons Kevin Sanjaya Changed Partners in the Thomas Cup

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo forced to change partners in Thomas Cup 2022. Here’s why Kevin often changes partners in the Thomas Cup.

Specialist badminton athlete in men’s doubles Kevin Sanjaya has made three appearances in the 2022 Thomas Cup. In the first Thomas Cup match against Singapore, Kevin was absent.

However, in the next three matches Kevin was always the choice of the Indonesian men’s doubles coach team even though he had to change partners.

In his first match in Group A of the 2022 Thomas Cup, Kevin was paired with Bagas Maulana to face Thailand’s Peeratchai Sukphun/Pakkapon Teeraratsakul men’s doubles.

The Indonesian men’s doubles, nicknamed Kebas, won over the Thai pair with a score of 24-22, 21-11.

Then in the next party against South Korea in Group A, Kevin’s turn was paired with Mohammad Ahsan. Unfortunately in this match Kevin / Ahsan lost to the South Korean pair Kang Minhyuk / Seo Seungjee 18-21, 21-13, 12-21.

Despite losing, Kevin is still trusted to be paired with Ahsan against China in the quarter-finals of the Thomas Cup, Thursday (12/5). The pair, nicknamed Kebabs, finally won with a score of 21-17, 21-18.

Here’s why Kevin often changes partners at the Thomas Cup.

1. Marcus Gideon Absent

Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo had to change partners in the 2022 Thomas Cup because his ideal partner Marcus Gideon had to be absent from this year’s championship.

This is the main reason Kevin had to change partners in the Thomas Cup. As is known, Marcus is absent from the 2022 Thomas Cup because he has to undergo a recovery period after ankle surgery.

2. Field Adaptation

Indonesian men’s doubles coach Herry Iman Pierngadi revealed the reason Kevin had to step down and be paired with a different partner was to adapt to the field.

Herry IP said Kevin with the quality of his game that must be lowered against Thailand is so that the player can feel the atmosphere of the match in the Thomas Cup.

“During training and matches at the Impact Arena, the conditions of the gust of wind were different. Yesterday during practice, the air conditioning was not fully activated. So players need and must be able to adapt to the gusts of wind when competing. Therefore, all players need to compete,” said Herry IP, quoted by Antara. from the PBSI release.

“Therefore, I have to play all the seven players that I brought. So that they can adapt quickly and feel the atmosphere of the match arena well,” said Herry IP.

3. Different Characters

Herry IP also revealed that Kevin dropped Kevin with a different partner in the Thomas Cup because of the player’s character.

According to him, Kevin and Bagas and Ahsan have different playing characters.

Kevin has been playing the role of playmaker who play in front of the net, while Bagas and Ahsan are the type of players who hit hard at the back.
