According to the Mayo Clinic, it is most often caused by atherosclerosis, a condition associated with the accumulation of fat, cholesterol, and other substances in and on the walls of the arteries. Therefore, if the cholesterol level is too high, it builds up on the artery walls, gradually leading to atherosclerosis and therefore PAD.

The American Heart Association (AHA) states that the most common symptom of PAD is painful muscle cramps in the hips, thighs, or calves when walking, climbing stairs, or exercising.

“PAD pain often goes away when you stop exercising, although this can take a few minutes. Muscles that work need more blood flow. Muscles that rest can last less,” says the AHA.

In addition to cramps in the hips, thighs, and calves, PAD also has other common symptoms to watch out for. These include numbness or weakness of the feet, sores on the toes, feet or legs that don’t seem to heal.

Leg discoloration, hair loss, reduced hair and toenail growth, weak or absent pulse in the legs and feet, men suffering from erectile dysfunction, and arm pain and cramps.
