26 beaches and a marina win the 2020 Blue Flag

The “Blue Flag” label for the year 2020 has been awarded to 26 beaches and the Saidia marina which “offer the security that summer visitors need to relax after more than three months of sanitary confinement”, indicated the Mohammed VI Foundation for the Protection of the Environment.

These are the beaches of Achakar (Tanger-Asilah), Aglou Sidi Moussa (Tiznit), Arekmane (Nador), Ba Kacem (Tanger-Asilah), Bouznika, Skhirate, El Moussafir (Dakhla), Essaouira, Foum El Oued (Laâyoune), Haouzia, Dalia (Fahs Anjra), Oued Aliane (Fahs-Anjra), Oued Laou (Tétouan), Oum labouir (Dakhla), Safi city, Souiria lkdima (Safi), Saïdia tourist resort, Cap Beddouza (Safi ), Sidi Kankouch 1 (Fahs Anjra), Sidi Ifni, Imintourga (Mireleft), Sidi Rahal 4th tranche, Oued Al Marssa (Fahs Anjra), Plage des Nations, Ain Diab Extension, Rifienne (Mdiq-Fnideq) as well as the port of Saïdia Pleasure.

The labeled municipalities take charge of the complete management of the beaches that fall within their scope, in particular maintenance, cleanliness, equipment, safety, training, awareness and accessibility, the Foundation said in a press release.

As part of the efforts to prevent a second wave of the Covid-19 pandemic, these municipalities are supported by the “Clean Beaches” program of the Mohammed VI Foundation for the protection of the environment, supported by the General Directorate of Communities local authorities, the ministerial departments concerned and economic partners who provide them with managerial skills and financial support.

In 2020, 26 beaches out of a total of 39 beaches that applied met the demanding criteria of this label, which is awarded by the Foundation on the basis of four families of criteria that go far beyond the quality of the waters of bathing, namely information, awareness and environmental education, health and safety measures and finally beach development and management.

The international Blue Flag label has been awarded to Morocco since 2002 by the Mohammed VI Foundation for the Protection of the Environment and the International Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE).

It is hoisted on 4,425 beaches and marinas in 46 countries in Europe, Africa, America, the Caribbean and the Pacific. Each year, after a long preparation and an evaluation by the program, it is allocated to the coastal municipalities which are in charge of beach management.

Created by the French office of the Foundation for Environmental Education in Europe in 1985, this label is managed throughout the world by FEE, a network of NGOs from 77 countries aiming to promote and implement environmental awareness and education programs.
