The situation regarding the coronavirus in Italy is escalating. With +2547 new infections and +250 new deaths, this corona train not only continues unabated, it even accelerates! Italy has now identified a total of 17,660 infections and 1,266 deaths.
They broke up five days ago records with 1,500 new infections and 133 deaths in 24 hours. Three days ago they registered “only” 977 new infections and 168 deaths, again a record. They are said to have performed about 73,000 tests (since yesterday).
To give a little idea of why things are going so badly (and therefore increasingly) there: Italy has about 5,000 beds for intensive care, 1,800 of which are in Lombardy and Venice. With a little improvisation, they could add 50 percent more to that. So they are already at their limit by 14.955 active cases: people who are still in treatment.
The mayor of Castiglione d’Adda, a town of 5,000 in the epicenter of Lombardy, had only one doctor available for a hundred corona patients. Three other doctors themselves were ill or in quarantine.
All in all, this has the effect that many people who need acute help end up in the queue between other people who need it just as much. Those finally on their turn are helped by rescuers who may have been awake (and working non-stop) for a day or two. This is, without exaggeration, straightforward horror scenario.
