240 M € from the State to renovate the Bordeaux University Hospital

This sum will finance ten works operations (90,000 m² to be built and as many to be restructured) on the three sites of the CHU, which receives one million patients per year. The Bordeaux University Hospital restructuring project amounts to 800 million euros over the next 10 years.

Minister of Health Olivier Véran announced a State commitment of 240 million euros for the restructuring of the Bordeaux University Hospital, a € 800 million project over the next 10 years.

This sum, from investment plan of 19 billion euros of the “Ségur de la Santé”, will finance ten works operations (90,000 m2 to be built and as many to be restructured) on the three sites of the CHU, which welcomes one million patients per year and is the largest employer in Nouvelle-Aquitaine, explained its general manager Yann Bubien during of a press conference.

“The situation of the Bordeaux University Hospital is paradoxical: it has both been ranked first for 4 years in the weekly Le Point and Newsweek has even qualified it as excellent but it ranks second to last in terms of dilapidated buildings… Which means that you know how to transform lead into gold, “the Minister of Health indicated in a videoconference.

“In some buildings of the 70s, there is a shower for 25 beds. It was urgent to transform this CHU to give it the means to achieve its ambitions,” he added.

This project, for which pre-works operations have already been launched according to Mr. Bubien, notably provides for the restructuring of the “tripod”, the iconic building of the Pellegrin hospital, the main site of the CHU, as well as the reconstruction of its maternity hospital. With around 6,000 deliveries per year, the maternity hospital at Bordeaux University Hospital is the first in mainland France, according to Mr. Bubien.

The preservation and restoration of the historic buildings of the Saint-André hospital, in the city center, is also planned, even if this site will lose its emergencies, as well as major improvements on the two sites of the South Hospital Group in Pessac.

In addition to the 240 M € of the State, the New CHU will be financed in particular by the sale of land and buildings, up to “a hundred million euros” even if the exact figure is not yet known. The recent buildings of Saint-André, dating from the 70s and 80s, will thus be sold.

When asked whether the Covid-19 had an impact on the project, Mr. Bubien replied in the affirmative. “Planned bed closures are no longer on the agenda“, he explained in particular.

The Bordeaux University Hospital plans toinvest 1.2 billion euros over the next 10 years, including 800 million under this project.
