2022 World Cup Qualifying Results: Netherlands Defeats Latvia 2-0

Amsterdam

Netherlands quickly rose from the top defeat Turkey a few days ago. Entertaining Latvia, De Oranje won two goals without reply.

In the continuation of the 2022 European zone Group G World Cup Qualification which was held at Johan Cruyff ArenA, Sunday (28/3/2021) early morning WIB, the Netherlands had quite a hard time penetrating the Latvian defense.

Even though he had 37 attempts, only 11 were aimed at the goal and two of them became goals in each round. Printers are Steven Berghuis and Luuk de Jong.

This victory makes the Netherlands temporarily move up to third in the standings with three points, ahead of Norway in fourth place. Latvia is in fifth place with zero points.

The course of the match

Both teams both need to win after losing the initial match. The Dutch fielded Luuk de Jong on the front lines along with Memphis Depay and Steven Berghuis, who were supported by Gini WIjnaldum.

The Dutch, who appeared to attack from the early minutes, had difficulty creating goals. In the sixth minute, the Netherlands came close to taking the lead had Igors Tarasovs not cleared De Jong’s header right across the goal line.

Davy Klaassen, who was played with Frenkie de Jong as a double pivot, also occasionally helped the attacker. The Netherlands continued to press the Latvian defense by crossing or passing short passes in midfield, but Latvia was still difficult to penetrate.

In the 16th minute, Berghuis has a chance to make a goal if his shot continues Memphis’s measured pass not wide. Berghuis did not waste a chance in the 32nd minute to put the Netherlands ahead.

Klaesen ended the neatly built attack with a short pass to Berghuis in front of the penalty box. From 20 yards, Berghuis shoots the ball into the top corner that Roberts Ozols can’t stop under the Latvian bar.

Until halftime, the Netherlands continued to lead with a score of 1-0. In the second half, the Netherlands again had difficulties to push their way into the Latvian defense.

In the 56th minute, the Netherlands stir up chaos in front of the Latvian goal when Matthijs de Ligt’s header is tipped over by goalkeeper Ozols. However, the ball was quickly cleared away again by the visitors’ rearguard.

The Netherlands got their second goal in the 68th minute. From a Memphis corner, the ball is headed for the penalty area and Luuk de Jong heads it in front of goal to make it 2-0.
