2022 World Cup qualifier preview: England, Scotland, France, Spain in action

The path to Qatar against European nations continues on Sunday with further World Cup qualifiers against England, Scotland, France and Spain.

France started their World Cup qualifiers in an unconvincing way with a 1-1 draw with Ukraine on Wednesday – and Didier Deschamps’ side are expected to return to an artificial stadium in Kazakhstan.

Germany, England and Italy won, but Spain met Greece 1-1 at home. This foursome is also back in play for the big 15 qualifiers on Sunday 15.

Spain are looking to recover from one of the surprising first-round results as they head to Tbilisi in search of their first win.

Despite Greece’s dominance during their game in Granada, the 2010 World Champions were countered by the tenacious visitors who came to a crucial point when captain Anastasios Paksitas moved from the penalty spot to cancel the opening game for Alvaro Morata.

Anything other than Spain’s win would leave the door open for Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who inspired Sweden to dominate the group and wants to pursue his win over Georgia with another away win against Kosovo.

Group C: Italy and Bulgaria let the other two catch up?

With Northern Ireland playing in international friendly matches on Sunday, Italy and Switzerland, who rank first, have the chance to scoop six points out of the chase group in two games.

Italy proved too strong for Northern Ireland in the first round, while Switzerland won 3-1 with three goals in Bulgaria in the first 12 minutes.

Northern Ireland’s performance in the second half at Parma was a welcome sign of how the Ian Baraclo side played, but those positive signals need to be converted into points. The problem is, if Italy and Switzerland did their job, they could actually catch up.

France did well when Antoine Griezmann took the lead against Ukraine in Paris, but Presnell Quimpembe’s goal in the second half started the champions’ defense with a disappointing draw.

With Kazakhstan failing to win their last six internationals, France’s next mission is one that they will have to complete relatively easily despite the long and arduous journey to the Astana Arena.

Elsewhere, Teemu Buki will try to inspire Finland to make its first and next World Cup appearance when it goes to Ukraine later on Sunday.

After the start of the World Cup qualification with a 2-2 draw against Austria on Thursday, Scotland will face a well-known opponent in Israel on Sunday.

Scotland will face Israel for the fourth time this season and for the sixth time in two and a half years. They lost both games away from home, their second 1-0 defeat in November with current coach Steve Clark at the helm.

Meeting on Wednesday with the Faroe Islands, who travel to Austria on Sunday, without loss is the minimum requirement for Scotland, as is Denmark, which is expected to claim its second qualifying win when Moldova hosted.

Romania and Germany – 7.45 p.m., broadcast live in the Sky Sports Premier League
Macedonia vs. Liechtenstein – 7.45 p.m., directly on the red Sky Sports Football button

Germany finished first in Group X after slightly beating Iceland on the opening night. Next up for Joachim Löw is a trip to Romania, which began with an exciting 3-2 win against North Macedonia.

Germany’s victory in Romania would open the door for Armenia to replace it among the front runners, but only if they manage to get two wins from two games in their first game against Iceland, which wants to score the first points. I wore them on the blackboard.

After qualifying for the Euro 2020 final – its first major appearance in the tournament – Macedonia is expected to increase its offer for the World Cup final if little Liechtenstein hosts it.
