2022 Mercedes SL: Coming to Norway next year

With a history dating back to 1952, the SL is one of Mercedes’ most iconic models.

In recent years, the model has almost drowned a bit among other exciting convertibles from the brand. But now the German engineers are really hitting the big drum.

SL is now launched in the seventh generation, with a bang!

For the first time, the model has now been developed from scratch at AMG. At the same time, it is the first time in history that SL now gets operation on all four wheels.

Heavy V8 engine

We go straight to the point: Initially, the new SL will only be available with AMG’s hefty V8 engine of four liters.

The motors are mounted by hand in Affalterbach according to the “One Man, One Engine” principle. And you can choose between two power outlets.

In the top model SL 63 4Matic +, the engine delivers a full 585 hp and a solid 800 Nm. It is enough that 0-100 km / h is done in just 3.6 seconds. The top speed is 315 km / h.

Then it is worth noting that the number combination SL 55 is making a comeback. It’s been a while since AMG last used the 55’s.

New SL 55 4Matic + gets 476 hp and 700 Nm. The acceleration from a standstill to 100 km / h takes 3.9 seconds, and the top speed is 295 km / h. Later, Mercedes-AMG will also offer the SL as an AMG E PERFORMANCE hybrid.

When AMG has used its best engineers, we naturally expect driving pleasure in large numbers.

Rear wheel steering

For the first time in its almost 70-year history, SL is now available with traction on all four wheels.

The V8 models introduced at the market launch are equipped with AMG Performance 4MATIC + four-wheel drive as standard. The intelligent system provides fully variable torque between the front and rear axles that ensures the best possible traction.

Standard on the car is also rear axle steering. Depending on the speed, the rear wheels steer either in the opposite direction of the front wheels (at up to 100 km / h), or in the same direction as the front wheels (faster than 100 km / h).

Stofftak

Mercedes has made great strides on the design. Seventh generation SL is new from top to now, inside to outside.

In the front, we recognize the AMG-specific grille, with 14 vertical slats. New and narrow LED lights are in place. At the rear, the stern is clearly tightened up, with four rough pipes that are guaranteed to bark loudly.

Now the fabric roof is also making a comeback on SL. Compared to the outgoing model, which has a metal roof, the new 21 kg is lighter. This ensures a lower and better center of gravity.

Opening and closing the roof takes around 15 seconds and can be performed at up to 60 km / h.

Four seats

The new SL gets a configuration with 2 + 2 seats, which was last introduced with the R 129 model in 1989.

This makes the new SL even more versatile, by making room for two rear passengers. Mercedes states, however, that those in the second row of seats should not be higher than 1.50 meters.

AIRSCARF is standard and sends warm air into the passenger compartment from openings in the head restraints, so that the head and neck area of the driver and passenger get extra warmth, even with the roof down.

Adjustable screen

The latest generation MBUX (Mercedes-Benz User Experience) is intuitive to operate and capable of learning.

In SL, AMG-specific content is visible in five different display styles. Exclusive menu items such as “AMG Performance” or “AMG TRACK PACE” should emphasize the sporty character.

The center console with an 11.9-inch touch screen dominates the space between the driver and passenger. To avoid reflections of sunlight when driving the car with the roof down, this screen can be electrically adjusted to a more vertical position.

New SLs are expected on Norwegian roads during 2022. In other words, here it is just to enjoy.
