Scientists have discovered the number of ants on Earth. It turns out that there are about 20 quadrillion (20 followed by 15 zero – 200 crore) of ants.
According to the study, their total weight is equivalent to 12 mega tons of dry carbon. This is equivalent to one fifth of the total weight of human beings on earth. The study was conducted by scientists from the University of Hong Kong under the leadership of Patrick Schultheis, who is currently conducting research at the University of Würzburg in Germany.
The study was published in the Proceedings of National Academy of Sciences. The number was calculated by evaluating 489 available studies on ant populations.
