20,000 can be taken out on strike

LAST: The deadline for mediation expired at midnight Thursday night – and the parties are now mediating overtime.

There is still a distance between the parties, confirmed mediator Mats Ruland to NRK at 23 o’clock on Wednesday.

– The status is that all three mediations are ongoing, that the parties are still in meetings and that they are working to find a solution to the issues that are in the mediation, Ruland said.

The mediation in the wage settlement for the state and the municipalities is in its final hours. Midnight Thursday night was the deadline the parties originally had to comply with, but mediation is now continuing in overtime – something that was expected.

When Ruland met the press on Wednesday night, he called the mediation “challenging”. To NRK, he indicated that the negotiations will probably be delayed overnight, but was still optimistic that he could help the parties reach an agreement.

– I am optimistic and hope we will be able to come to a solution, but there is no doubt that there is a real danger of conflict in the three mediations that are taking place now, he said.

Requires wage growth

Ahead of the mediation at the Ombudsman, the mood has been amp, especially among teachers and nurses, who this year have gone high on the field with demands for solid wage growth. The reason is not least that these large groups feel thoroughly overlooked in last year’s wage settlement.

There, the public sector had to accept a framework of 1.7 per cent, in line with the front subject, while the final figure for the private sector was 2.2 per cent.

– This wage settlement must be more than a normal intermediate settlement. It must be the start of something new that can help solve a societal problem, said Unio’s chief negotiator Steffen Handal when the demands were handed over in April.

Teacher: – Goes in the direction of strike

If the mediation ends in a breach, teachers, nurses and other municipal employees will go on strike. Unio has announced that it will take out 7,000 of its members if there is a strike. These are distributed to a number of schools, kindergartens and various types of health institutions across the country.

The will to strike is great, says teacher and leader of the Education Association in Bærum, Bjørn Sigurd Hjetland, to VG.

– The main reason why this is going in the direction of a strike is that wage developments have been far too poor for teachers, nurses and other hard workers in the municipalities. We must have a real wage increase. If there is no strike, Hjetland tells the newspaper.

Can step up already on Thursday

The union has taken a more cautious line and will initially lay off 4,700 employees if it ends with a strike in the municipal settlement, but VG writes that there may be an escalation as early as Thursday if the mediation ends in conflict.

– We have protected children and young people, health and everyone who works with the vaccination program in the municipalities. Both school, kindergarten and SFO will work as usual, says leader Mette Nord in the Trade Union in a press release.

3,500 government employees can be laid off

For the state, breaches of the negotiations could lead to 3,500 employees in, among others, the ministry, the police and universities being taken out on strike.

Oslo Municipality is a separate tariff area. Here, Unio has announced that 647 members may be taken out on strike, while the Trade Union will take out 1,200 members. Both have announced that they will take out employees in schools and kindergartens.
