Family celebrations, vacation trips and a lot of new infections: For the first time since the end of April, more than 2,000 new infections are reported in one day in the Corona crisis in Germany.
The number of new infections reported daily with the Coronavirus in Germany has exceeded the threshold of 2,000 and reached the highest level since the end of April. The health authorities in Germany reported 2,034 new corona infections within one day (data status 08/22 at midnight), according to the Robert Koch Institute (RKI) on Saturday morning. The value was last higher on April 25 with 2055 new infections registered. The peak of new infections reported daily was at more than 6,000 at the end of March / beginning of April, after which the values fell significantly. The number of records has been increasing again since the end of July.
More tests, more cases
However, the current increase in the number of cases does not allow direct conclusions to be drawn about the occurrence of the infection, since the number of tests carried out has recently increased immensely. According to RKI data, in calendar week 31 from July 27 to August 2 there were still around 578,000 (transmitted by 165 laboratories), two weeks later the number was already more than 875,000 (transmitted by 181 laboratories). The values can change in the course of late registrations, and multiple tests of individual people can also be included.
In the week of April 20-26, the number of tests had been around 364,000 (transmitted by 178 laboratories) – significantly lower than currently. The rate of positive results was then five percent, now it is just under one percent.
The RKI announced a few days ago that the increasing number of cases can currently not only be explained by the increased number of tests. Nationwide there are a large number of smaller outbreaks that are associated, for example, with larger celebrations in family and friends, according to the situation report from Friday (21.8.). In addition, a large proportion of corona cases are identified among travelers returning, especially in the younger age groups.
R values drop slightly
Since the beginning of the Corona crisis, at least 232,082 people in Germany have demonstrably been infected with the Sars-CoV-2 virus, as reported by the RKI. According to the RKI, the number of deaths in connection with a corona infection is 9,267. Seven more deaths have been reported since the previous day. According to RKI estimates, around 206,600 people had survived the infection by Saturday morning.
According to RKI estimates in Germany, the number of reproductions, or R value for short, was 1.02 (previous day: 1.04) according to a statement on Friday. This means that an infected person infects another person on average. The R-value depicts the infection rate about one and a half weeks beforehand.
In addition, the RKI gives a so-called seven-day R-value. It relates to a longer period of time and is therefore less subject to daily fluctuations. According to RKI estimates, this value was 1.12 (previous day: 1.14) according to Friday. It shows the infection process from eight to 16 days ago.
