Tohoku 2-week weather: Heavy snow until tomorrow 23rd Temperatures tend to be high during the New Year holidays

December 22, 2023 17:59

Heavy snow will continue on the Sea of Japan side of Tohoku until the 23rd (Saturday). Please be careful about the impact on traffic and power outages. The cold wave will pass on the 24th (Sunday), and it looks like it will be a relatively calm Christmas Eve. After that, high temperatures will continue during the year-end and New Year holidays.

Heavy snow again from the night of the 22nd

Due to the cold wave, heavy snow has fallen in the Tohoku region since the 21st (Thursday), even in flat areas.
As of 5 p.m. today, the 22nd (Friday), the snowfall has rapidly increased to 39 centimeters in Sakata City, Yamagata Prefecture, 21 centimeters in Akita City, and 47 centimeters in Aomori City.

From tonight until dawn tomorrow, Saturday the 23rd, the snow will become heavier again, with heavy snowfall expected from southern Akita Prefecture to Aizu, Fukushima Prefecture. By 6pm tomorrow, 30cm of new snow is expected to fall in many places on the plains and 50cm along the mountains. Please be careful of slipping in your car, falling while walking, and power outages due to snow accumulation.
For more information, please see the tenki.jp article “Snowfall will increase further on the Sea of Japan side of Tohoku tomorrow, the 23rd (Saturday), and traffic will continue to be affected”.

A series of cold waves will pass on the 24th (Sunday), and the day will be relatively calm. At night, it will snow in some places in Iwate Prefecture, Akita Prefecture, and Yamagata Prefecture, but it is unlikely to snow heavily.
From around the 25th (Monday) to the 27th (Wednesday), low pressure systems are expected to frequently pass over northern Tohoku and Hokkaido. The weather in the northern Tohoku region and the Sea of Japan side will be unstable, but as warm air enters, there will be many places where it will rain instead of snow. Rain immediately after a heavy snowfall will loosen the snow, so please be careful of snow falling from the roof and avalanches.

What will the weather be like during the New Year holidays?

The beginning of 2024 has been marked as sunny in many places. For now, it seems that you can visit the shrine on New Year’s visit without bringing an umbrella. However, on the 2nd (Tuesday), umbrella marks were widely seen due to the effects of low pressure. If the low-pressure system approaches early, it may start raining on New Year’s Day, so please check the latest forecast.

Temperatures will continue to be high during the New Year holidays, with the expected maximum daily temperature expected to be 10°C in Akita, 12°C in Sendai, and 13°C in Fukushima.
There will be few snow marks throughout the period, and there will be rain and wet snow even on the Sea of Japan side.

This year, the forecast is for a mild winter, and snow tends to fall in large quantities when the weather temporarily gets colder. If you enjoy skiing or snowboarding, you want to make sure you don’t miss out right after it snows. For the snow forecast at ski resorts, please refer to the tenki.jp article “Ski resorts: Snow forecast for this winter: Average or low snowfall, likely to increase temporarily.”
