2 Indonesian Citizens Who Lost Contact After the Turkiye Earthquake Found Dead in Diyarbakir


DIYARBAKIR, KOMPAS.com – The Indonesian Embassy in Ankara said that two Indonesian citizens who had lost contact after the Turkiye earthquake were finally found.

However, the two Indonesian citizens were found dead.

The Indonesian citizens are Irma Lestari from Lombok and Ni Wayan Supini from Bali.

Both were victims of the Turkiye earthquake who were found in the ruins of the Galeria Apartment in Dyarbakir City on Friday (17/2/2023).

Previously, on Thursday (16/2/2023), a joint team from the Indonesian Embassy in Ankara-INASAR (BASARNAS) led directly by the Director for Protection of Indonesian Citizens and Indonesian Legal Entities, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Judha Nugraha, had departed for Diyarbakir to search for the two Indonesian citizens.

The team coordinated with AFAD (Turkish Disaster Management Agency) for the search process at the Galeria Residence apartment, where the two Indonesian citizens lived.

After the body was found, the identification process was carried out with the support of the National Police DVI Team which is currently in Hatay.

From the identification results, the identity of the two bodies found could be confirmed.

The Indonesian Ambassador to Turkiye, Lalu Muhammad Iqbal, admitted that he had conveyed the sad news to the families of the victims in Indonesia.

“We are all very sad. God willing, with the confirmation of the bodies of our two brothers, the Indonesian Embassy in Ankara and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will immediately try to return the bodies to their respective hometowns,” he said in a written statement.

According to him, the team is currently carrying out funerals and bringing the bodies from Diyarbakir to Adana and then returning them to the country.

The body is scheduled to depart from Adana to Jakarta on 22 February 2023.

The Indonesian Embassy in Ankara noted that Irma Lestari and Ni Wayan Supini are Indonesian migrant workers who work as professional spa therapists in Dyarbakir.

The apartment they lived in was completely destroyed by an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.8 on Monday (6/2/2023).

The Indonesian Embassy in Ankara received information that a total of 89 victims died in the apartment.

Condition of 500 Indonesian citizens in Turkiye

Ambassador Iqbal said that a total of around 500 Indonesian citizens were around the earthquake site in Turkiye.

A total of 128 people have been successfully evacuated by the Indonesian Embassy in Ankara.

The rest are safe but have found safe shelters around the earthquake area.

As many as 10 Indonesian citizens were seriously injured and have been treated by the Indonesian Embassy in Ankara.

Meanwhile, the number of Indonesian citizens who died, which was originally 2 people, has now become 4 people after the bodies of two more Indonesian citizens were found.
