2. Bundesliga: Coach Jos Luhukay leaves FC St. Pauli

Jos Luhukay will no longer coach FC St. Pauli in the 2020/2021 season. The club from Hamburg and the 57-year-old have agreed on this, as St. Pauli announced. The decision was made “immediately after the last game of the season against SV Wehen Wiesbaden”, which ended in a 3: 5 loss. A successor is still unknown.

In April last year, Luhukay took over from Markus Kauczinski as coach. The sporting season had been disappointing for St. Pauli. At the end of the season, the team was only two points ahead of relegation in 14th place in the table.

“A better placement prevented a disappointing appearance abroad,” said Luhukay, whose team had the worst away record in the second division.

First foreign trainer at St. Pauli

“Jos rightly pointed out that he was brought in to put his finger in the wounds,” said sports director Andreas Bornemann in the message: “He did that, maybe a little too deeply for our club.” Luhukay himself said: “Today I would certainly do something different when it comes to publicly presenting the internally requested and necessary criticism.”

According to Bornemann, despite the defeat by the two derby victories against Hamburger SV in the past season and as the first foreign coach in club history, Luhukay “secured a permanent place in the club’s history.”
