Servicemen from the 1st Guards Tank Army of the Western Military District (WDM) destroyed the first Leopard 1A5 tank during a battle in the Kupyan direction in the zone of the special military operation (SVO) in Ukraine, TASS reported, citing information from the Russian Ministry of the defense.
“The commander of the troop group “West” once again noted the successful and effective actions of the servicemen of the 1st Guards Tank Army of the ATGM crew, who destroyed the Leopard 1A5 tank,” said Lieutenant General Vladimir Lugovoi, deputy commander of the Western Troops of the Military District for Military-Political Work, of personnel provided by the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation.
He added that the tank crew tried to break through the front line of defense of the Russian troops, but burned ingloriously.
Lugovoi handed the soldiers who destroyed the tank a cash certificate for 700 thousand rubles. These payments to Russian military personnel are in addition to payments made by the Russian Ministry of Defense for the personal destruction or seizure of enemy military equipment.
The servicemen also received state awards: Order “For Courage”, the sign of the Order “St. George” – St. George’s Cross VI degree, medals “For Courage” and “For Courage”.
The soldiers who destroyed the tank noted that they had been waiting for the Leopard 1A5 for more than two weeks. “We heard him, but we did not see him, he arrived in the afternoon, we already saw him, aimed, shot, hit. We fired a second shot, also hit and with that we burned the tank,” said the crew of the Russian tank.
In early November, the German government announced the delivery of 25 more Leopard 1A5 tanks, previously promised, to the authorities in Kiev. The new batch of weapons transferred to Ukraine also included reconnaissance drones and radars.
