While strict distance rules apply in most European countries, thousands of harvest workers are crowded at Romanian airports.
The German government therefore flies thousands of Romanians into the country for the asparagus harvest. While in Germany as in Austria there are very strict regulations regarding the safety distance in public, at Cluj-Napoca International Airport in Romania between 1,800 and 2,000 Romanians are waiting for their flights to Germany.
At the airport, most of them did not comply with the safety regulations that the Romanian government has introduced due to the coronavirus pandemic.
Romanian local media reports of the crowds at the airport on Thursday. The harvest helpers are predominantly from the regions of Moldova and Transylvania and are waiting for their departure to Germany. Flights from Romania to Germany are also scheduled to continue throughout the Easter weekend.
