NUR SULTAN – Ministry of Health Kazakhstan said 164 people took part in the bloody protests that have rocked the country over the past week.

The death toll reported by the state television station Khabar-24 has increased significantly from before. It is not known whether the number refers only to civilians or whether law enforcement deaths are included.

According to Kazakhstan’s Health Ministry most of the dead – 103 – were in Almaty, the country’s largest city, where demonstrators seized government buildings and set several vehicles on fire.

The state ombudswoman for children’s rights said three of those killed were minors, including a 4-year-old girl.

Earlier, the Kazakh authorities said that 16 policemen or the national guard had been killed. Authorities previously put the civilian casualty toll at 26.

The ministry previously reported more than 2,200 people were seeking treatment for injuries from the protests, and the Interior Ministry said around 1,300 security personnel were injured.

Meanwhile, the Kazakh president’s office said that about 5,800 people were detained by police during protests that escalated into violence last week and prompted the Russian-led military alliance to send troops into the country.
