16-year-old robs department store on Dam Square with fake firearm

A security guard at a department store on Dam Square arrested a 16-year-old boy this weekend who tried to steal jewelry. Under threat of a fake firearm, he tried to get the valuables with him, but was arrested around the corner from the department store.

The theft happened around 11:45 a.m. yesterday afternoon. The boy snatched jewelry from the counter and started to run for the exit. On his way out, he aimed the firearm at a security guard, among other things. A colleague of the security guard was able to arrest the suspect around the corner of the department store. There it turned out to be a fake firearm instead of a real firearm.

The minor suspect is currently in custody. The police emphasize that theft and robbery with fake firearms can have major consequences, also for minor suspects. With a fake weapon that is barely distinguishable from the real thing, the police may feel compelled to draw and even use their service weapon. In red-handed situations, it is difficult to determine whether a weapon is fake or real, they state with the message on their site.
