126,000 dead – Virologist Fauci sees “serious problem” in the United States

Prominent US virologist and presidential advisor Anthony Fauci has been extremely concerned about the rapid rise in corona infections in many states. “We have a serious problem in certain areas,” Fauci said Friday at a press conference by the US government’s Coronavirus Task Force. “We can only get through this together.”

A number of states are currently experiencing the highest infection rates since the corona crisis began. Countries in the south of the country such as Florida, Texas and Arizona, but also in the west such as California are particularly affected. Due to the skyrocketing infections, Texas ordered bars to be closed on Friday. Florida banned serving alcohol in bars.

The Corona Virus Task Force held a press conference on Friday for the first time in two months. US Vice President Mike Pence tried to present the development in the most positive light possible. “We have made really remarkable progress,” he said, noting that the number of confirmed new infections is increasing, but not that of fatalities. As previously US President Donald Trump, Pence attributed the increasing number of corona cases to an expansion of tests.

With around 40,000 reported cases, the number of new corona infections in the United States reached a new high on Thursday. Pence, who heads the task force, said: “We have lost more than 126,000 of our countrymen to the disease.” He expressed his sympathy to the relatives of the victims. Pence said the goal was to “protect lives and reopen them safely”. All 50 states had taken reopening measures. Pence called on U.S. residents to continue following virus protection guidelines. The Vice President also asked her to pray for it.

Pence emphasized that the measures taken so far had “created a solid basis for all the challenges that we could face in the coming days or months”. But he also admitted: “We still have work to do.”

Critics accuse US President Trump of no longer paying the necessary attention to the crisis. The president has been pushing for a rapid return to normality for weeks to get the economy going again in election year 2020.

The CDC health agency estimates that only a fraction of the infections are likely to have been recorded to date. “For every case we recorded, there were probably ten more infections,” said CDC director Robert Redfield. In the United States, nearly 2.5 million positive corona cases had recently been registered.

Most experts primarily blame Trump’s easing of corona restrictions in the states for the increasing number of cases.

The House of Representatives spokeswoman Democrat Nancy Pelosi criticized the government for dealing with the Corona crisis. Resistance to science, “denial” and late response to the pandemic have led to deaths, Pelosi said at a press conference on Friday.

On Friday, Trump canceled a weekend trip to his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. The White House did not initially give a reason. A few days ago, New Jersey, together with the states of New York and Connecticut, ordered a two-week quarantine for visitors who visited a US region particularly affected by the corona virus. This includes Arizona, where Trump was this week.
