Beware of Email Scams: Olga’s Story of Fraud and Recovery

The woman received an email telling her to pick up the package. “It was an e-mail saying you had a package that you need to pick up a package. And I really waited. Of course, many smart people are reading now. It is not neatly written, there are mistakes. I entered real card numbers,” said Olga.

Fraudsters have used Olga’s company accounts for purchases in various countries around the world. A few days later, when she realized that there were no more 17 thousand in the company’s account, she contacted the bank. Olga denies that she had knowingly entered any of the Smart-ID PIN codes into her phone before. However, her bank says that it is very likely that at the time when the fraudsters attacked, the woman confirmed the connection of a foreign device with the PIN code.

From the foreign device, the fraudsters went on to manipulate Olga’s company accounts, card and make purchases in Singapore, Serbia, Syria and elsewhere in the world. Olga asked the bank to block the money that was still reserved.

Without waiting for action from the bank, Olga began to act on her own, calling companies abroad where the money was reserved. In this way, she recovered approximately six thousand euros.
