Lifting the crooked spine with crutches, they walk towards Akshara Khani’s church yard. Saudi woman Nouda Al Qahtani started learning letters at the age of 110. They came to school through a program organized by the Saudi Ministry of Education with the aim of eradicating illiteracy. They are currently studying at a school in Al Rahwa, Umwa Governorate, in the southwestern part of the country.
She has been attending school every day with more than fifty others since she joined the center’s illiteracy eradication program weeks ago.She is a mother of four children. The elder ‘Kutti’ is 80 years old and the younger ‘Kutti’ is 50 years old. Nauda told local media that learning to read and write changed her life. She says she enjoyed the lessons and completed each day’s homework. It was difficult for someone over 100 years old. Nauda said that it was too late and she should have completed her schooling years ago. They do not hide their sadness that a good time has passed without learning the alphabet.
“Of course, it would have made a lot of difference in my life and the lives of others,” she added. All four children support Umm’s studies and are optimistic about their new decision in life. It is true that it is too late, but his son Muhammad said that he believes that God’s will will be done now. Another son said that he used to take his mother to school every morning and wait for her to finish classes.
The younger son said that we are happy and proud that mom is learning something new every day. We know that this is not easy for our mother who is over 110 years old.
