10 videos show the extent of the protests against police violence in the USA
The United States is not resting. Protests continue after the death of George Floyd across the country. The African American died in a police operation on Monday. A policeman had pushed Floyd’s neck down for several minutes, even though she repeatedly said she couldn’t breathe. A video of the police operation caused horror across the country.
Parts of the United States looked like war zones on Saturday evening. So all major roads to Minneapolis were closed on Saturday evening, military helicopters flew over the city, which was preparing for further riots with arson and looting. There were also violent scenes in other US cities.
Tens of thousands of people took to the streets from Seattle to New York. Cars burned in New York, Atlanta and in front of the White House in Washington. In Los Angeles, police used rubber bullets and batons against demonstrators who set fire to a patrol car. Two dozen cities imposed curfews, including Los Angeles, Chicago, and Atlanta. At least eight states requested support from the National Guard.
Expert Thomas Jäger, professor of international politics and foreign policy at the University of Cologne, told watson why the protests are sometimes so violent. An entire nation witnessed live how a police officer killed a person on the street. “You don’t have to be a prosecutor to see that someone was killed here. In this brutality, in this matter of course for the abuse of power by the police, this has rarely been so clearly visible. » One of the police officers involved has since been charged with homicide and negligent homicide.
Videos that are shared on social media show the full extent of the protests, which by no means all result in riots or even looting.
