Everyone dreams of feeling useful in their job and fulfilled in their career. But sometimes things don’t go exactly as planned. If your professional motivation is not good, these ten tips are for you.
1. Learn to listen to yourself
To feel that one’s work has meaning is a subjective reality. The recipe is not the same for everyone. It is therefore absolutely essential to know how to listen to yourself in order to understand what makes sense for you. Is this the sector in which you work? The type of business? What position do you hold? The answers to these questions should allow you to get to know yourself better and therefore, at the same time, to better understand how to find meaning at work if the motivation has disappeared over the months. The point of this introspection is therefore, you guessed it, to come to be in agreement with yourself. This analysis can take some time, it can also be facilitated by talking about it to your family or friends. They may have some answers to your questions.
2. Find a new balance
Professional development often requires a good balance between private and professional life. In recent months, having to practice telework has shaken up certain habits. Some find their way around it perfectly while others less so. If you notice an imbalance, it can be resolved by putting in place new processes. For example, by refusing to answer your emails outside office hours. If you regularly feel overwhelmed, this can be a way to alleviate this feeling. If you work from home and feel like you’re going in circles, you can, for example, exercise during your lunch break. This will allow you to ventilate your body, but also your mind. In short, nothing is irremediable, and achieving a good balance between private and professional life can be done.
3. Maintain relationships with colleagues
A study carried out by the firm Deloitte and baptized “Meaning at work or forbidden»Affirms it, teamwork represents the first criterion of meaning at work for employees. It is by setting up unifying projects with their colleagues that they feel fully accomplished. If nothing like this exists in your company, why not come up with a new project to accomplish collectively? Do not hesitate to shake up habits to be able to unite a group around you. It can also mean a greater commitment to this type of time together. Whether it’s a sporting activity or an afterwork. Feeling well surrounded often allows you to better appreciate your job.
4. Living off your passion
It’s everyone’s dream! Being able to get involved in a field that you particularly appreciate gives more meaning to your work. But if it doesn’t, there are ways to approach it. If you are particularly fond of literature, why not offer reading workshops to your colleagues during your breaks or after work? If travel thrills you, you can also imagine a weekend getaway with colleagues. New initiatives are often appreciated.
5. Develop your skills
There are many ways to develop skills within a business. This may involve continuing education which then allows you to qualify for a position that is more suitable for you. But also to the development of projects that are important to you. Projects for the planet, for example, or for humanitarian works, can give meaning to your working days. The idea is to let others benefit from your know-how. It will certainly lead you to a certain professional fulfillment.
6. Knowing how to reinvent yourself
The loss of meaning at work often happens when you have held the same position for many years. Days go by, then months and finally years, and one has the impression of stagnating without satisfactory career prospects. Why not reinvent yourself? By assuming, for example, your role of leader within the company. Or by seeing the positive impact of your tasks on your colleagues or people outside the company on a daily basis. Reinventing yourself also means changing your point of view on your work.
7. Learn to relativize
Sometimes demotivation can also be explained by ambitions that are too important. If your professional career takes up too much space in your life, it would be good to learn to put things into perspective. Especially since if you are in office during the current economic crisis, it is already rather good news. In addition, you may not change the face of the world from your desk, but if you manage to complete tasks that have a positive impact on society and your business, then the mission is already fully fulfilled. Keep in mind that you can also find meaning outside of your job, through a passion, for example.
8. Open up to change
In an economy that has accelerated in recent years, digitization requires, we must be able, more than ever, to open up to change. This necessarily requires a period of adaptation, but this journey can allow you to reach new professional and personal goals. It is therefore necessary to remain open in all circumstances, to also guess the opportunities to be seized, it is by adapting that we can sometimes find our way.
9. Make full use of your skills
Sometimes it can happen to fall into a vicious circle. Demotivation pushes some employees to no longer give the best of themselves. This is felt within the company and the prospects for development darken. This situation is not irrevocable, however, it is up to everyone to realize it and put their hearts into work. If you feel that your skills are not in sufficient demand, you can also talk to your supervisor, he will certainly be able to hear you and, who knows, offer you new assignments closer to your professional and personal qualities.
10. Be ready to change lanes
Have you already applied some of the tips above, but nothing helps, feels like your work is meaningless? Perhaps it is time to think about a retraining or a change of company. Nowadays, many employees find themselves in this situation and it can allow a fresh start. You can, for example, turn to a responsible company, closer to your personal aspirations. Or opt for continuing education in order to qualify for other functions. If unemployment affects many sectors impacted by the pandemic, others, on the contrary, continue to hire new talents. This concerns various trades such as that of order picker for e-commerce, delivery person, nurse or driver.
