1 in 10 People in Indonesia with Diabetes, Deputy Minister of Health Dante: Highest in North Maluku

JAKARTA, iNews.idDiabetes is one of the non-communicable diseases that affects many people in the world, including Indonesia. Deputy Minister of Health dr Dante Saksono Harbuwono said, as many as 1 in 10 Indonesian people suffer from diabetes.

“Currently in 2021, Indonesia ranks 5th for the number of diabetics in the world. Then from the evaluation of diabetes rates in the world, it can be seen that 1 in 10 people in Indonesia suffers from diabetes,” said Dr.

There are several things that cause Indonesia to have a high number of people with diabetes. Dr Dante explained, Asian people themselves are genetically predisposed to have diabetes more easily than Caucasians.

In addition, the lack of public awareness to carry out health checks or medical check-ups on a regular basis makes the number of people with diabetes in Indonesia like an iceberg. Therefore, there are still many cases of diabetes that are not diagnosed and treated.

“Our country is not only a genetic problem, but also people’s compliance in carrying out health checks that cause miss diagnosis and undiagnosed. This is a homework that must be handled together,” he said.

On the same occasion, he explained which areas had an increasing prevalence of diabetes. Starting from Jakarta, Makassar, until the highest occurred in North Maluku.

“The prevalence of diabetes in the Jakarta region is increasing. And not only in big cities, but also in sub-urban areas,” said Dr. Dante. “The highest diabetes rate in Indonesia is in North Maluku, almost a quarter of the population suffers from diabetes,” he said.
