It is quite possible that it will take many years before we see a game as long and grueling as last night between the Tampa Bay Lightning and the Columbus Blue Jackets. Both teams will need five overtime periods, or eight in total, before closing the debate – the fourth longest game in Stanley Cup playoff history. The record stands at six overtime …
The record for the hockey universe comes from Norway, with 8 (!) Additional periods.
Let’s say that under the circumstances, this meeting, which was almost three times longer than usual, had its share of impacts.
Since we are in a bubble and the locker rooms must be disinfected between each game, the game between the Bruins and the Hurricanes had to be postponed. You have to understand that the Tampa-Columbus Marathon started at 3 p.m. and didn’t end until 9:30 p.m. Thus, the next match will have to wait… until this morning, 11am.
2020 is full of surprises …
Records, but not victory
If Andrei Vasilevskiy secured the win with 61 saves on 63 shots, Joonas Korpisalo MASSACREED the previous record of single-game saves of 73, stopping 85 of 88 shots aimed at him.
Joonas Korpisalo just set a new NHL record with his 74th save, surpassing my @Sportsnet teammate Kelly Hrudey’s single-game record of 73 from the Easter Epic in 1987.

For his part, Seth Jones broke the record for the most minutes played in a match. With 65 minutes, the American played the equivalent of a full regular season game, in addition to the 5 minutes of overtime.
With that whistle, Jones hits 63:55. A new record. #CBJ https://t.co/Ys89Iwsglk

It was Pierre-Luc Dubois who scored the first goal of the match, more than six hours before the end of the game. The Quebecer has shown great things since returning from the NHL, and his potential is particularly palpable.

Brayden Point scored his first goal of the game…

Six hours before his second, which turned out to be the victory. Good dose of relief for the Lightning, but huge disappointment for the Blue Jackets, who lose after all an effort. 3-2, final mark in fifth overtime.

Anyway, a lot has happened in this game – but it would be crazy to get through this long marathon, let’s be frank. Records were broken and the Bolts won against the Jackets in the playoffs… for the first time in two playoff rounds!
And it wouldn’t be a Columbus game without John Tortorella getting angry with the refs. The head coach was furious and called for a penalty for a game completed seconds before the winning goal. Seth Jones also criticized the referees for this ridiculous non-decision.

“Don’t ask me about the non-call”

1-0 Tampa Bay!
The Flames take the lead
The Flames-Stars match also ended with a score of 3-2, but it was slightly shorter than the previous one. In Calgary, Dillon Dubé was the hero of the game. Here is his first net of the game on the power play:

Joe Pavelski, meanwhile, decided to use his elbow to deflect Denis Gurianov’s shot behind Cam Talbot.

But Rasmus Andersson finally settled the debate in the second half to give the Flames the lead in this series. We must not forget that they are the underdogs in this clash… and that they could hurt the Stars in the next match.

Ah yes, we forgot. Matthew Tkachuk battled Corey Perry, a fight that didn’t come out of nowhere: it was obvious these two would throw the gloves off.

Vegas brakes Cinderella
While the Blackhawks were able to pull off the inexperienced Oilers in the qualifying round, they don’t face the same type of challenge against the Vegas Golden Knights. Game # 1 of this series will have left no doubt – the Hawks, 12th in the West, will have scraps to eat in order to win this duel.
For a third game out of four, Robin Lehner got the start. He was also one of the four players who dropped to one knee during the national anthem.
Shea Theodore opened the scoring with his patience, outwitting Ben Bishop with the help of that wrist shot.
Patience is the name of the game for Shea Theodore (@stheodore17). #StanleyCup

Reilly Smith finally scored the last two goals of the game, including this one, a little beauty from the backhand. Jonathan Marchessault orchestrated the two nets …

Since Smith left Florida, he’s scored more goals than the team in the playoffs – with just 8!
