Ukrainian forces have recaptured the southern chokehold of Kherson and nearly recaptured the Kinbrun peninsula south of Kherson, Governor Vitaly Kim Mykolaiu said.

This is the first time Ukraine claims it has retaken the area east of the Dnipro River through Kherson.

This was reported by journalist Kim Won-bae.

Vitaly Kim, a fourth-generation Koryoin and Ukrainian governor of Mykolaiu, said on 22 local time that Ukrainian troops had nearly recaptured the Kinbrunn peninsula, according to AFP news agency.

Earlier, a spokesman for the Armed Forces of Ukraine’s Southern Command said on television that Ukrainian forces were conducting military operations in the Kinbrunn peninsula.

The Kinbrunn peninsula lies at the junction of the Dnipro River and the Black Sea, flowing down from the city of Kherson, a southern strategic point retaken by Ukrainian forces on the 11th.

The administrative division belongs to Mykolaiu Oblast.

Ochakiuwa, at the southern end of Mykolaiu province, is only about 4 km across the Black Sea.

If you go north from the Kinbrunn peninsula in a northeasterly direction, you will reach Kherson, which is about 120 km away.

This is the first time Ukrainian officials say they have retaken the area east of the Dnipro River from Kherson.

The War Research Institute, a US think tank, said if the Ukrainian military establishes a foothold in the Kinbrunn Peninsula, it would help control the port cities of Mykolaiu and the Kherson region.

Earlier, after occupying the Kinbrunn Peninsula, Russia launched several rocket and artillery strikes against Ukrainian-controlled Black Sea coastal cities, including Ochakiu and Mykolaiu.

The Kinbrunn Peninsula is out of range of the Russian 152mm guns which have established positions on the banks of the Dnipro River, so Ukrainian forces can reliably launch an offensive.

At the same time, it was estimated that it would weaken the offensive of Russian forces on the Graphite coast and expand the scope of activity of the Ukrainian Navy.
