Macron’s comments on “security guarantees” for Russia are receiving criticism from German politicians

On the other hand, the FDP faction’s spokesman for foreign affairs, Ulrich Lehte, praised Macron’s diplomatic efforts.

“It’s a good initiative, but the basic rule for such negotiations is the willingness of Russia and Ukraine,” Lehte said, adding that “aggression has always come from Moscow.”

Meanwhile, his colleague Jürgens Tritins, who represents the Greens, said in a conversation with “Die Welt”: “Security guarantees are important, but not unilateral. Whoever requests them must first promise them to Ukraine.”

The representative of the opposition Christian Democrats (CDU), Johan Vaudeful, also called Macron’s proposals “extremely problematic”.

He said that discussions in the framework of the European Union (EU) and NATO should be held as a matter of urgency, adding that

Macron “turns everything upside down”, because security guarantees are needed, first of all, for Ukraine.

“Also, he unfortunately supports Russian propaganda when he claims that NATO is the cause of the security problems,” admitted Vadeful.

At the same time, Macron gained unexpected recognition from the eurosceptic Alternative for Germany (AfD) party.

As Tino Hrupalla, head of the AfD faction, said in an interview with “Die Welt”, the fact that the proposal was made so late by Paris, not Berlin, can be recognized as a “judgment” for the current coalition .

He added that Macron has rightly pointed to the need to take into account Russia’s “legitimate security interests”.

Meanwhile, Jāns Korte, the executive director of the traditionally pro-Moscow left-wing extremist party “Die Linke” (“The Left”), has called for an evaluation of Macron’s proposals.

Macron’s statements have previously drawn sharp criticism from Ukraine.

Mykhailo Podolyak, adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said the world needs security guarantees from Russia, not the other way around.

“The civilized world needs security guarantees from the barbaric intentions of post-Putin Russia,” Zelensky’s adviser stressed in a tweet on Sunday.

On the other hand, Secretary of the National Security and Defense Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov said that the best guarantees not only for Ukraine but for the whole world would be a Russia demilitarized and deprived of its nuclear weapons.

Additionally, Finland’s former foreign minister, Alexander Stubbs, said he “fundamentally” disagreed with Macron.

Russia must first ensure that it will not attack others,” Stubb stressed on Twitter.
