[경제]100 crash tests, 45,000 hours of quenching…safe Korean cars

26 models of Hyundai Motor Company received the best report card ever, receiving an excellent grade or higher from the most demanding American Highway Safety Insurance Association.

Thanks to the investment of 45,000 hours by conducting 100 crash tests for each model, we were able to change the image of Korean cars that were once considered cheap cars.

Reporter Lee Seung-yoon went to the scene.

An electric car that rushes at 64 km/h.

Many parts are broken with a roar, but the most important thing is the safety of the occupants.

The airbag exploded properly, and there were no major injuries to the driver’s seat and the ‘dummy’, which is a human body model in the back seat, and there was no problem with the battery of the electric car.

After the crash test, engineers are busy collecting data on whether the door lock was properly unlocked and how the ‘dummy’ suffered.

When a new car is developed, it must go through 100 crash tests and 3,000 virtual crash tests through computer simulation.

As a car worth tens of millions of won and a pile of 1.5 billion won are broken every time, it costs more than 10 billion won and 45,000 hours to develop crash safety alone.

After such hardening, 26 models of the Hyundai Motor Group received the best and excellent grades last year from the American Highway Safety Insurance Association, which is famous for the most demanding crash evaluation.

In addition, all of Hyundai’s electric vehicles received the highest rating in the European new car safety evaluation program, changing the perception of Korean cars.

Automakers are putting their life and death on the task of resolving future safety issues through self-driving electric vehicles, such as crash tests.
