In a large-scale operation, the Freiburg criminal police department searched a total of 48 objects in the entire area of responsibility of the Freiburg police headquarters on May 18, 2021 in close coordination with the public prosecutor’s offices in Freiburg, Lörrach and Waldshut-Tiengen.
This involved suspicion of possession and distribution of child pornographic material. Most of the searches were carried out in Freiburg and the district of Lörrach, but objects were also searched in the districts of Emmendingen, Waldshut and Breisgau-Hochschwarzwald.
The police found over 250 pieces of evidence in the course of the searches. These are predominantly smartphones, tablets, notebooks, computers and other data carriers. The judicial police specialists are still evaluating the data carriers that have been seized. Investigations are underway against 53 suspects between the ages of 14 and 84. According to the current state of knowledge, there is no concrete connection between the individual searches or suspects.
The more than 50 preliminary investigations started after information from US security authorities. “The Freiburg Police Headquarters takes every hint seriously. More than 130 officers were involved in today’s searches alone. We will keep the investigation pressure up in the coming days and months,” said Arno Englen, Head of the Freiburg Criminal Police. “Anyone who owns or distributes such material can expect to be discovered.”
