The HfM Detmold is now accepting applications for its composition course. With the appointment of the composer Prof. Dr. Mark Barden, a new composition class is established. The aim of the course is to find your own musical ideas and develop your own musical language. The concert hall with its unique wave field synthesis invites you to creatively deal with sounds. An ensemble for contemporary music made up of fellow students specializing in orchestral instruments can perform newly created works. Composition students can also benefit from the audio and video production options offered by the Tonmeisterinstitut and other institutes. The possibilities of online documentation of newly created musical works are also constantly being developed.
Part of the course is the exploration of compositional forms of expression, which extends to experimental, cross-border formats from the areas of installation, intermedial art and music theater. Knowledge of traditional ways of playing all instruments serve as the basis for expanding creative playing techniques. These are discussed in an ongoing dialogue with guests from contemporary music and tested on their own works. In-depth focus areas can be set in the master’s course.
The course management has been in the hands of Mark Barden since the winter semester 2020/21. He is one of the most prominent composers of the young generation. His works were honored with the composer’s prize of the Ernst von Siemens Music Foundation. Bardens concert music is performed by leading musicians such as Klangforum Wien, Ensemble intercontemporain, ensemble recherche, the Mivos Quartet, KNM Berlin, Ensemble Mosaik, Nicolas Hodges, the Arditti Quartet and many others, as well as at festivals such as the Donaueschinger Musiktage, Wien Modern and the Witten Days for New Chamber Music listed.
More than 700 students from over 50 nations are trained at the Detmold University of Music. The campus university with short distances promotes a lively exchange between students and lecturers and thus enables a special study atmosphere. Artistic networks are formed here from which students can benefit for their professional practice.
