Bradenton Gulf Islands vacation bucket list | Top 10

Munich / Bradenton, April 14, 2021: The Bradenton Gulf Islands region with its Anna Maria Island and Longboat Key has a relaxed and rather quiet lifestyle. Picture-perfect Florida as you imagine it, far from the crowds of tourists. Here are our “Top 10” things that should be on every vacation bucket list.

1. Just do nothing

When you arrive in Bradenton, and especially on the islands, you will immediately notice that the clocks tick differently here. If you end up here, you don’t need a watch for a summer dress and Bermuda shorts. The switch to island time and Florida lifestyle is best done on the beach with your feet in the sand with a gentle sea breeze or with an iced coffee in one of the colorful cafes. Deliberately do nothing and let it drift!

2. Live in one of the colorful beach houses on Anna Maria Island

If you stay overnight on Anna Maria Island, it is best to do so in proper style in a colorful beach house in pastel yellow, blue, green, red or rose. The lovingly restored and tastefully furnished holiday homes often even have their own beach access and pool. The islanders and the county administration ensure that the island remains architecturally authentic with official requirements – houses can have a maximum of three floors here.

3. Enjoy the tranquility of Longboat Key
n

It is not without reason that the Conde Nast Traveler Longboat Key regularly chooses one of the most beautiful islands in the Sunshine State. The snow-white sandy beaches, aquamarine blue and clear water, the shallow entry into the sea and the dunes make the island and exotic bird species, the diverse aquatic fauna with fish, dolphins and manatees as well as the subtropical vegetation enrich the island.

4. Get a close look at manatees

The Bishop Museum of Science and Nature is one of Florida’s largest natural history museums, which also includes the Bishop Planetarium and the Parker Manatee Aquarium. Here, injured manatees are cared for by marine biologists and, as soon as they are healthy again, brought back into the wild. The plump giants that move in the water as if in slow motion gave the county its name.

5. Visit the historic fishing village of Cortez

At the northern end of Sarasota Bay is Cortez, the oldest fishing village in Florida. Since it was founded in the 19th century, the people of Cortez have been fishing with pride. If you are out and about in Cortez, you should definitely visit one of the restaurants and plan time for the markets, because the best fish and the freshest seafood are available here.

6. Watch or be there while horse surfing

Every now and then you can see a parked horse trailer with a crowd of people on the embankment road Palma Sola Bay between Bradenton and Anna Maria Island. This then prepares for a horse surfing excursion. The adventure begins with a saddleless ride along the Palma Sola Causeway before rider and horse plunge into the cool water in the bay of Palma Sola. As soon as the horses are shoulder-deep in the water, the daring riders get up and “surf” on their horse’s back.

7. Stroll along the Riverwalk

Not far from downtown Bradenton is the Riverwalk, which is not only a beautiful 2.5 kilometer walk, but also a popular recreational hangout that hosts numerous events and festivals throughout the year. There is also free public art and playgrounds for children.

8. Observe the sea creatures

Bradenton Gulf Islands is a special highlight for all animal lovers. The coast of the region is home to many dolphins, especially the common North American bottlenose dolphin. But turtles, pelicans and manatees also love the warm, shallow and plant-rich water. Whether from the pier or boat, kayaking or stand-up paddling, the curious sea creatures love to be seen.

9. Sundowner am Strand

The Gulf of Mexico is famous for its magnificent sunsets. Marveling at the daily play of colors is therefore a fixed ritual before you then stop for dinner in one of the charming restaurants.

10. Dinner with your feet in the sand

A dinner in good company with your feet in the sand is part of the Florida lifestyle. Many restaurants have tables right on the beach – including a cinematic sunset over dinner.
