A “ghost ship” adrift and unmanned for more than a year ran aground on the south coast of Ireland due to the storm Dennis, informed the Irish coast guard.
The abandoned 77-meter cargo ship is the High and ran aground on the rocks near the village of Ballycotton, near Cork, Ireland’s second city.
THE Alta’s odyssey started in September 2018, when it was damaged in the middle of the Atlantic, en route from Greece to Haiti.
The ten crew members spent 20 days on board the ship, while floating 2,220 kilometers southeast of Bermuda, before being picked up by the crew of a U.S. Coast Guard boat.
At the time, the US Coast Guard said it was working with the then owner of the Tanzanian flag ship to organize a trailer.
But, from then on, the question of their movements is controversial. O site maritime news Fleetmon he reported receiving correspondence from the alleged owner, stating that the ship had already been rescued twice from Guyana in the recovery process.
But then there was an official sighting of the 44-year-old freighter in August 2019, when the British Royal Navy patrol ship HMS Protector found the High floating, unmanned, in the middle of the Atlantic.
“We approached the ship to establish contact and offer assistance, but no one responded,” according to the feed of the ship on Twitter.
The journey of High ended up in the Irish rocks last weekend when the storm Dennis reached the area of Ireland with heavy rains and winds up to 110 kilometers per hour.
The Irish Coast Guard said a rescue helicopter was dispatched to the scene on Sunday, but no crew was found.
The Cork County Council said on Monday that there was no sign of a spill of pollution in the area around the ship and that at low tide, on Tuesday, a further assessment would be carried out. “Consultations continue between the Irish Coast Guard, the Cork County Council, the Shipwreck Relief and other relevant bodies regarding the future of the wreck,” he said in a statement.
