Zutphen braces itself for the arrival of farmers for ‘childish fine’ | Inland

A traffic controller ensures that they have a place in the Martinetsingel to park their tractor, according to a spokeswoman for the municipality. The trial will begin shortly after noon on Wednesday afternoon. The street will reopen after the court case, when the farmers have left.

A farmer, Thijs Wieggers of Farmers Defense Force from Mariënvelde, will appear in court on Wednesday, who does not agree with a corona fine that has been imposed on him. He was fined a thousand euros because he gathered on his land with a large group of farmers last year for a symbolic action to celebrate the 75th anniversary of the liberation of the Netherlands.

At the time, the farmers from the Achterhoek depicted the logo of 75 years of freedom with different tractors. In doing so, they kept their distance, the farmers themselves said. They therefore speak of a ‘childish fine’, says spokesman Rutger van Lier to De Telegraaf. The reactions of citizens to the initiative and the images of it were positive. Wieggers, however, received a hefty ticket afterwards. “Too crazy for words”, says Van Lier. “Many farmers want to show that we absolutely disagree with this kind of bureaucratic mismanagement and how the government and the judiciary deal with us. Then you, as a government, are really stuck in your rules and you no longer look at the practice to see whether something is beautiful and well-intentioned.”

The municipality of East Gelre, which includes small Mariënvelde, was not yet available for comment on Wednesday morning.
