Four Angel awards for Žbirka
Miro Žbirka succeeded posthumously with the recording, which was completed for him by his son David, known from the band Sunnbrella. The singer recorded the vocals at home in Strašnice, Prague, otherwise the album was created in London studios. At Saturday’s ceremony, she successively won the awards for the best Slovak album, solo artist and album of the year, while the song of the year became the single You are not alone. “You’re not alone / You can tell my lighthouse in the sea of evil in the waves,” Miro Žbirka and David Žbirka sing in this intergenerational duet. He performed that song live at the Exhibition Center. Meky’s voice sounded from playback, David Žbirka sang his own part on the spot. He was accompanied by a five-member band, including bassist Kryštof Mašek from the Vypsaná fiXa line-up.
The prizes for the album Posledné veci were accepted by David Žbirka and his widow Kateřina Žbirková. “I don’t know what to say at all, it hit me,” said Žbirková for the first time and thanked everyone she remembered. When she returned to the stage several times, she admitted that she ran out of words.
“I really don’t know what to say. When there was the single You’re not alone: it came out on the day when we all wished that Ukraine was not alone. So it was a kind of message from Meky. Meky, thank you. And I’ll leave one more message here To Marta, who sang with him for twenty years,” said Žbirková, after which she handed over the space to the singer’s longtime vocalist. “Meky introduced me as a very nervous singer at every concert. I sang the song Co bolí, to prebolí with him for twenty years. And he always wished that his songs would survive. This is happening. Meky forever,” added the vocalist.
