Like the runners involved in the Grande Boucle, patients treated at the Saint-Germain clinic, located in Saint-Germain-en-Laye, challenged themselves to make their Tour de France.
84 patients and caregivers
Since the beginning of June, they had been pedaling on exercise bikes during their treatment to accumulate the kilometers.
Friday July 2, the joint efforts of the 84 patients and caregivers who took part in the game won their bet.
“It is thanks to an algorithm that the effort was converted into kilometers, according to the level of difficulty of each one. If the objectives were not achieved, it was up to the caregivers to catch up. “
If the planetary sporting event served as a support for this operation, the idea of making dialysis patients pedal was launched within the clinic in September 2020 by doctors Julie Attias and Laure Lavoisier-Champion.
“Get them back in shape and morale”
“The health crisis has had a strong impact on patients who had seen their physical activity reduced during this long period. These immobilizations made them more vulnerable and affected their morale. The primary objective of the clinic was to restore their fitness and morale through sport. “
The first 6 bicycles made available quickly proved insufficient to meet patient demand. Also, before launching the Tour de France operation, the clinic bought 6 others.
“The dialysis unit provides heavy and very long care during which we only offer TV to patients. Today, during this forced episode, they have a sports offer representing an additional activity that improves their physique. This is a very good idea from the team of two nephrologists who returned to service in October 2019. ”
Other challenges ahead
Along with cycling, exercises to be performed with weights are also offered. All sports activities are supervised by liberal physiotherapists who accompany each patient.
Given the success encountered, the Tour de France operation could be declined in favor of future sporting events such as the Olympic Games.
