Youth hostels in Eastern Bavaria: Will there be a new beginning after Corona?

The youth hostel association wants to decide on the future of the Regensburg youth hostel in the coming months. The plan to rebuild the 180-bed facility was stopped three years ago. Because most of the construction projects at the Bavarian state association were put on hold because of Corona, there is now an investment backlog.

Three projects in the pipeline

“At the moment it is not foreseeable whether we can build to the desired extent – and whether that can happen in the foreseeable future,” says regional association spokesman Marko Junghänel. In addition to the new building in Regensburg, there are two larger construction projects on the waiting list in Oberstdorf and Berchtesgaden. However, funding for all three has not yet been secured. In early summer 2023, the presidium will deal with this question again, it is said.

The Regensburg youth hostel with more than 180 beds is located on the Unterer Wöhrd, an island on the Danube in the middle of the city. The house was built in the 1930s, the furnishings are considered outdated.

Clearcutting in Lower Bavaria

Three youth hostels have been closed in eastern Bavaria since the beginning of the corona pandemic, namely the houses in Haidmühle, Bayerisch Eisenstein and Ihrlerstein near Kelheim. The youth hostel in Landshut should also be closed at the end of the year. This was prevented by a citizens’ initiative. The city council was able to take a corresponding decision to preserve the house because Landshut is one of the last municipally operated youth hostels in Bavaria.

New start in Furth im Wald

In contrast, the youth hostel in Furth im Wald was reopened last summer. The house had been completely renovated for four million euros. The district of Cham and the Free State had borne part of the costs and thus prevented the closure of the house. According to the youth hostel association, the refurbishment of the house in Furth im Wald was the only construction project in Bavaria in the past three years, along with the modernization of a youth hostel in Munich.
