Young volunteers are mobilizing to help the SPA refuge, in Amilly, near Chartres

In the middle of rapeseed fields, in Amilly, near Chartres, the “Refuge des Acacias” SPA is home to around fifty cats and dogs, abandoned one day by their owner.

If twenty volunteers take care of them usually, this Friday, April 22, they saw a dozen new faces.

What is the principle of operation?

For the first time, the Youth Information Point, located in Sours, organized a mobilization day to introduce young people to the SPA and help the association, for an afternoon.

Barbara Munduteguy, head of the Chartres Métropole Youth Information Point, develops:

“I am personally very attached to animals and I thought that young people could be too to do a little volunteering and support the animal cause. »

Barbara was right. After a message posted on social networks, detailing the project of this day, the young woman found herself with dozens of requests for participation.

“It’s great that teens are interested, it makes me happy to see that young people want to get involved and contribute on their own scale. »

How was the day?

This day of volunteering began at the Leclerc shopping center in Barjouville with a collection of foodstuffs for dogs and cats.

“I’m happy because people were receptive. We received three carts filled with cat food, litter, kibble and treats to donate to the Acacias shelter. This operation is a success and a great proof of solidarity,” says Barbara Monduteguy.

What did the young participants think?

This is the first time that Sébastien, 15, has come to the SPA. “I didn’t expect it to be like this. It pains me a lot to see the dogs behind the fence of their cages. »

The Chartrain is moved. “I have animals at home so it makes my heart a little twinge. The young man stops in front of all the cages. To get to know everyone.

Young people are very invested. They participate in the maintenance of the premises, walk the dogs from the kennel along the meadows and visit the cats in the cattery. Surrounded by volunteers who give them advice, they discover the organization of the refuge.

“It’s a great moment of generosity, solidarity and sharing”, agree in saying Barbara Munduteguy and Sabine Métayer. The latter adds:

“The most important thing is to make young people aware of the animal cause. They are the future. This kind of initiative allows us to tell the story of the dogs and cats present here. To tell them their stories. If we explain now to the adults of tomorrow that an animal is not an object that we take and leave aside when we feel like it, then things will perhaps improve in a few years. »

Sabine Metayer (president of the Acacias refuge)

Faced with demand, the Youth Information Point will organize new days of action this summer between young people and the SPA, for its part the animal protection association is always “delighted to welcome new volunteers. »
