Young people will receive an injection against meningococci by appointment this year

Ten thousand young people born in 2006 will be invited by the GGD in the coming weeks for an injection against meningococci. Because of the corona virus, this will not be done on a large scale in the Rai, unlike in other years, but by appointment with Parent and Child teams.

Meningococcal is a serious disease that can cause blood poisoning and meningitis. RIVM considers the importance of vaccinating young people against the disease before the summer so great that this is now done by appointment. They are at an increased risk of contracting the disease.

Because of the coronavirus, young people cannot come if they have a cough or a cold. This also applies to young people whose family members have a fever. Only when the complaints have disappeared 24 hours, the young people may still come for their injection.

Large-scale injection meeting

Originally, a large-scale needlestick meeting was scheduled this spring to get children ages 9 through 14 vaccinated against BMR, DTP, HPV, and meningococci, but this is canceled because of the coronavirus. The intention is to have that injection still take place in the autumn.

In the two previous years, all young people born between 2001 and 2005 were already invited for a vaccination. Since 2020, the National Vaccination Program offers children standard vaccination when they are 14 months and 14 years old.

The infection is particularly dangerous for young people between 14 and 24 years old. 28 percent of those who got the disease died.
