Young Estonian badminton players dominate ‘Yonex Latvia Junior 2022’ tournament in Sigulda

Young Estonian badminton talent Tauri Kilks won two gold medals at the World Junior Ranking Badminton Tournament “Yonex Latvia Junior 2022”, which was held from November 11 to 13 at the Sigulda Sports Center.

In the final of the singles tournament, Tauri Kilk defeated the Indian badminton player Madhur Dhingra in straight sets, and in the mixed doubles she triumphed in pairs with Elizabeth Beric. In total, young Estonian athletes won six medals in Sigulda, according to information from the Latvian Badminton Federation.

Robin Harper and Harry Wakefield from England convincingly won junior doubles without dropping a single set in the tournament, Swedish pair Elina Ehling and Elina Ryberg won junior doubles and Maria Koryagina from Ukraine won junior singles.

Latvian badminton players won the only prize in junior doubles, where Anželika Nadtočija and Riga’s Elza Zitāne won one game, lost in the semifinals and shared third place (the games for bronze did not take place).

The ‘Yonex Latvia Junior 2022’ badminton world tournament was attended by 139 players from England, Estonia, India, Italy, Israel, Lithuania, Norway, Finland, Ukraine, Germany, Sweden and Latvia. The junior (U19) world ranking tournament was held for the first time in Latvia. It was planned as early as 2021, but did not happen due to the Covid-19 restrictions.
