“You just won’t believe it, even if you’re there yourself”: Miss Nathalie wins Golden Shower Knob from Q-Music and receives a grand reception from her students | rant

rantThere was a big party on Thursday morning at the playground of primary school De Springplank in Broechem. The children could hardly believe that their very own Juf Nathalie, who teaches the five-year-olds, was chosen in the Q-Music studio in Vilvoorde as the winner of the ‘The Strafste Stem Onder De Douche’. On her return, she was greeted with a red carpet. Nathalie herself sees herself on stage more often. “I would like to do so much more with singing”

Nathalie Dufrasne (33) could not believe her eyes, and especially her ears, when the verdict fell this morning. “You just don’t believe it, even if you’re there yourself,” she says enthusiastically. “It was such a nice experience. We were in that final with four completely different candidates and you absolutely could not predict who would make it. We were all so different.”

Nathalie had participated in the election of ‘The Strafste Stem Onder De Douche’ by Q-Music. That election was already in its second edition and started before Christmas last year. “We had a total of 16 candidates and every so often we had to compete against each other in groups of four, until only 4 people remained.” she continues. “It started with a simple audition over the radio, but at a certain point you actually had to come to the studio in Vilvoorde to record a medley with a few other candidates. At each round, the listening public could then vote via the Q app.”

Red carpet, balloons and big screen

She really had to pull out all the stops for the final today. “It started with an opening act, where we performed a song that we had not chosen ourselves. Then another medley and then followed the ‘Dolle Douche’ round. In doing so, we had to get into our robes, brush our teeth, effectively scrub our backs in a shower, and so on. Super fun to do. In the end we released a solo song, for which I chose the song ‘How it dances’ by Davina Michelle and Marco Borsato. Yesterday I rehearsed all day for that.”

After hours of biting her nails, Nathalie finally walked away with the main prize: the coveted ‘Golden Shower Knob’ and a check for 10,000 euros, to be used exclusively for the renovation of her bathroom. And the festivities weren’t over yet. When ‘Miss Nathalie’ arrived at her school in Broechem, all the children were cheering for her.

“We even put up a screen on the playground for the children who arrived in the morning,” says director Christophe Delen. “The boxes were loud enough for parents and children to follow. In the end, the lessons also started ten minutes later, because just as the bell rang it was announced that Miss Nathalie had won. That was, of course, great joy. We immediately started blowing up balloons and decorating her classroom. And a red carpet was even rolled out for her. When she entered the schoolyard a little later, everyone ran outside again and she was received by a guard of honor of children and balloons.”

Singer in the making

For Nathalie herself, the victory also means something more. “Of course I am very happy with the bathroom,” she laughs. “But I would actually like to do so much more with singing. I’ve never had a serious education in music – some solfège and a little bit of piano – but I do have a passion for it. I’ve auditioned for singing competitions in the past, but never got very far. Last year I also participated in the Strafste Vote, but then I was soon out. Now I take singing lessons, mainly for vocal hygiene, because I like to combine singing with my job as a teacher. That can be pricey. I have 26 preschoolers in the class. You talk all day long and sometimes get angry. That is very tiring for the voice.”

Nathalie adds that she has already taken steps towards a career as a singer. Anyone who wants to order her for events can already do so. “I’ve only just got one Facebook page started up where I offer that service and people can hire me to perform. On a much smaller scale than today, of course. Wedding ceremonies, receptions and even funerals. It’s a start.”
