Benzyl benzoate solution is an effective and European-recommended first-line treatment for scabies. According to the study, almost 90 percent of hypothyroid patients were cured with the help of benzyl benzoate solution.

It is not available in Finland.

The reason is simple, but unfortunate. There is no medicinal product on the Finnish market because no pharmaceutical company has applied for such a marketing license in Finland, chief physician Vesa Mustalami Fimeas told Iltalehte.

However, it is possible to import and order medicinal products containing benzyl benzoate to Finland for your own use under certain conditions. We found out where you can get medicinal products and at what price.

Prices vary widely

Everyone is allowed to bring medicinal products into the country for their own personal use from the European Economic Areas, i.e. EEA countries, a maximum amount corresponding to one year’s treatment and from outside the EEA countries, a maximum amount corresponding to three months’ treatment.

You can therefore seek help for scabies while on vacation in, for example, Spain or Greece, or you can take a longer shopping trip to, for example, Estonia or Sweden.

Benzyl benzoate is available as a solution and cream. In the rest of Europe, a 10–25% solution is used to treat scabies.

100 milliliters of a 25% solution costs about NOK 539.90 in a Norwegian pharmacy. In euros, the solution costs 47.35.

Ovelle brand benzyl benzoate solution is sold in Ireland. 150 milliliters of a 25% solution costs around 10.99–11.39 euros, depending on the pharmacy. The same brand is also available in liter packages. Its price beats the price in Norway, as a liter bottle costs 42.50 euros.

When looking for the right medicine, it is important to know the translations of benzyl benzoate in different languages. In German, the substance translates to benzoesäurebenzylester or benzyl benzoate. In French it is benzoate de benzyle, in Spanish benzoato de bencilo.

Remember, you’re looking for a 10-25% solution.

Correct search results can also be obtained by searching for benzyl benzoate in English and adding the percentage 25 after.

In Finland, benzyl benzoate is only available as an ointment with a special permit. In the rest of Europe, it can be obtained from a pharmacy without a prescription. One of these countries is Sweden.

The Tenutex cream is available in a 100 gram tube for SEK 299. In euros it is 26.69.

Medicinal products can also bear different names. German pharmacies have a product called Antiscabiosum, which contains benzyl benzoate. A 200 gram tube of emulsion costs around 30 euros.

Caution with ordering

It is also allowed to order medicinal products to Finland from EEA countries. However, legal online pharmacies in EEA countries usually do not deliver medicines outside their country or language area.

Ordering medicinal products from outside EEA countries is prohibited.

If you want to order a medicinal product containing benzyl benzoate from online pharmacies outside of Finland, it is recommended to use healthy caution and judgment.

It is important to note whether the website is legal, whether the product comes from an EEA country, whether the product is correct and whether it can be ordered in Finland.

In Finland, permethrin cream, sulfur vaseline cream and ivermectin tablets are used in addition to these creams to treat scabies. According to studies, 10-25% benzyl benzoate and ivermectin tablets were equally effective in curing scabies.
