Ymer won his first Wimbledon match – after a thrilling battle

Mikael Ymer, 98th in the world rankings, started the match better and 36-year-old Tsonga looked heavy. The Swede won the first set 7-5.

During the two initial sets, Ymer had 16 break balls and 85-ranked Tsonga zero, but despite that, the score was 1-1 when they were finished playing.

In the second, 22-year-old Ymer had a set ball, but lost after a tiebreak.

In the third set, the former world five Tsonga broke to 3-3 and won 7-5, but in the fourth, the Swede again showed proof of mental strength when he won 6-4.

Tsonga injured himself

At the beginning of the decisive set, Tsonga slipped badly on the grass and grabbed his leg, but in the end he got up and continued playing. Ymer then broke to 3-2 and eventually won 6-3.

A successful start for the Swede when he plays the main tournament at Wimbledon for the first time and now he has to face either the Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime or the Brazilian Thiago Monteiro.

Djokovic also continues

Ymer has at most reached the third round of a grand slam tournament. He did so in both the Australian Open and French Open earlier this year.

Tsonga has a grand slam final on the merit list, but it was already thirteen years ago at the Australian Open.

Serbian world setter Novak Djokovic is already ready for the third round after defeating Kevin Anderson in straight sets 6-3, 6-3, 6-3.
