Yet another national fireworks ban

There will again be a national fireworks ban around the turn of the year this year. The pressure on hospitals is high due to corona, the caretaker cabinet believes that hundreds of fireworks victims should not be added on top of that. Yesterday, insiders reported that there would be no ban.

Last year there was also a national fireworks ban in connection with corona. This resulted in far fewer accidents . 108 people with injuries reported to the hospitals and 275 to the GPs. The average number of injured in other years was over a thousand.

The Association of Dutch Municipalities and the mayors of the Security Council this week asked the cabinet in a letter to fire to impose a ban on the sale and lighting of fireworks this year as well.

Ministers Ollongren (Internal Affairs) and Grapperhaus (Justice and Security) said this morning before the start of the Council of Ministers that they take the signals from the mayors very seriously. Minister De Jonge (Public Health) added that “the stretch in healthcare is completely gone”.

Yesterday it seemed that this year no national fireworks ban because municipalities have the option of taking measures themselves. However, the cabinet has gone the other way.
