March 31, 2024 06:00

Today, the 31st, there will be many places from Kyushu to Tohoku where there will be a “very high amount” of pollen. In addition to cedar pollen, be careful of cypress pollen. During the day, yellow dust is expected to fly over a wide area from Kyushu to Hokkaido. Please take all possible precautions such as wearing a mask.

Pollen dispersal is “extremely high” over a wide area

Today, the 31st, it is expected to be sunny over a wide area, mainly in the morning. From Kyushu to Tohoku, there are many places where the amount of pollen is extremely high.

Although cedar pollen has passed its peak in some places, the amount of cypress pollen is increasing in areas such as Kyushu, Tokai, and Kanto. If you have hay fever, please take all possible precautions such as wearing glasses and a mask.

During the day, yellow sand is flying

Following yesterday’s 30th, yellow dust was observed in Tokyo and Osaka in the early hours of today’s 31st. During the day, yellow sand is expected to fly over a wide area from Kyushu to Hokkaido.

According to the Ministry of the Environment, flying yellow dust is associated with allergic symptoms in the eyes, nose, and skin, and has been reported to cause itchy eyes, conjunctivitis, runny nose, and sneezing. The higher the concentration of yellow sand, the more these symptoms tend to occur. It has also been reported that it is associated with respiratory diseases, and when yellow dust is blown away, symptoms of the respiratory tract, eyes, and skin may worsen. People with respiratory diseases such as asthma need to be even more careful.

When yellow sand is flying, wearing a mask (such as a non-woven mask) can be expected to have a certain degree of preventive effect. When wearing a mask, choose one that fits your face to prevent air from escaping.

How to prevent yellow sand and pollen?

To prevent yellow sand and pollen as much as possible, we recommend the following measures.

① When you return from outside, make sure to brush off any pollen from your clothes and hair before entering the front door.

② If you open the windows wide, it becomes easier for pollen to enter the room. When ventilating, simply opening the window by about 10 cm and using lace curtains will reduce the number of pollen entering the room to about one-fourth compared to when the window is fully open. There are also experimental results that show that it can be done.

③ Dry laundry and bedding indoors as much as possible. If you have an air purifier, please use it as well. Drying your laundry and bedding in clean air will make your time more comfortable.
