Xbox Series S in the eyes of developers. Creators warn of “serious problem”

Microsoft presented two new-generation consoles, but developers from around the world do not focus on the most powerful next-gene, but try to explain the assumptions of the Xbox Series S. According to many developers – the smallest Xbox will be a big problem.

Already on the day of the presentation of the Xbox Series S, the first comments appeared, according to which the new shape can be a big problem for developers. Even today, I presented a preliminary analysis of Digital Foudry – according to journalists The next-gen console may have a problem with offering improvements known from the Xbox One X.

I decided to check how the situation of the Xbox Series S is commented on by other developers and the opinions are divided. Some of the creators directly say that a weaker next-gen will cause a lot of trouble and can cause inconvenience to developers.

Billy Khan (lead engine developer at id Software) says bluntly that “The situation with memory is a serious problem”. According to the creator of DOOM Eternal, aggressively lowering the rendering resolution will help minimal, but will not completely remove the shortcomings.

David Mickner (creator of the online mode with Infinity Ward) noted that a lower specification console will be a bottleneck for the entire generation:

Dan Weiss (senior programmer from Squanch Games) posted a big thread in which he emphasized that the Xbox Series will be considered a “lower level console” in relation to the PlayStation 5 because of the Series S. The developer explains many problems of the cheaper device and points out that developers will “cut everything” so that games can run on the Xbox Series S. Weiss pointed out that the creators will be forced to “push this shit” for the next 5+ years and that will be a big problem for many bands.

However, Thomas Puha (Remedy’s communications director) believes the Xbox Series S could be an “interesting balancing act.”

Jeff Grubb disagrees with the developers, who believes that the presented specification is suitable for 1080p gameplay, and that Velocity Architecture is an additional advantage.
