Xbox Boss Phil Spencer Discusses the Revival of Classic Games and Potential Acquisitions

Not long after Microsoft announced last year that they were acquiring Activision Blizzard, fans began listing classic franchises they’d like to see play out and suggesting that the studio should develop games made by other teams.

Now that Activision Blizzard is officially part of Microsoft, the wish list has grown even further, but is this something Xbox boss Phil Spencer would even allow? It turns out the answer is yes, because Spencer visitedOfficial Xbox Podcast‘s latest episode to talk about acquisitions. When he was asked about the team’s revival, he said:

“If the team wants to go back and revisit some of the things we have – and put our minds to it – I’m all for it.

Spencer also said he sees Game Pass as an opportunity for Microsoft to revisit dormant franchises a few times a year – again mentioning that he loved Hexen as a kid:

“I do think with Game Pass, we have the ability to pick up a couple franchises a year and almost, like, revisit it. I just made that word up. So it’s not the branding on the box, but you know, I tease Something like Hexen just because I remember playing it as a kid. I don’t have plans for that, but I do think that when you see all the franchises that we have on the team, there’s an opportunity for us to go back. Even if it’s just a moment of recognition And what those things mean in the history of gaming, and do something right with it. Make it available to people through Game Pass. I think that’s an opportunity.

Are there any cool franchises you’d like to see Microsoft make a comeback? Maybe Ghost in Alliance, Banjo Kazooie in Toys for Bob, The Last Viking in Rare, or Hutson in Trayak ? Let us know in the comments section.

Check out the fun episode of the podcast below. The discussion about revisiting classic games starts around the 17-minute mark.
