Würzburg: Talavera will be…

Parking on the Talavera is chargeable. The Würzburg city council decided this late Thursday evening by a majority – with 27 to 21 votes. From June 2022, half an hour will cost 30 cents. The maximum daily rate is 9 euros. The decision was preceded by a long discussion in the city council. Before the meeting, retailers had demonstrated for a socially acceptable solution.

The topic had also made waves in the last few days. District Administrator Thomas Eberth had emphasized that the management of the Talavera was a matter for the city, but it would have been good to get the district on board in the run-up to the discussion.

An alliance of several city council factions had brought the management into the conversation. Initially, 50 cents per half hour were discussed. There was headwind from many sides. Within a few days, more than 8,500 people had signed an online petition against the parking fees. Retailers and the Chamber of Industry and Commerce also expressed criticism. The alliance then backtracked.

The Talavera is not only an important parking lot for the people of Würzburg, but also for commuters from the districts of Würzburg, Main-Spessart and Kitzingen.

Parking fees on the Talavera as part of the traffic concept

The parking fees on the Würzburg Talavera are part of the traffic concept “Better living in the Bischofshut”. The alliance had launched the concept in autumn 2021 – now the city council has passed it by majority in several partial votes.

The aim is to increase the quality of stay in the city center of Würzburg by reducing the number of cars. Various measures are planned for this. In addition to the management of the Talavera, new parking zones and tariffs are to be introduced in the city center. The following applies: the more central a parking space, the more expensive it should be. In the core area, the costs should be around 2 euros per hour.

There are also plans to remove around 485 downtown street parking spaces. This does not apply to resident and disabled parking spaces. More than 750 additional parking spaces are to be created in multi-storey car parks.

The concept also envisages creating Park & Ride offers and making public transport more attractive – for example by allowing parking tickets to be used as tickets.
