WSJ: Western weaponry is a logistical nightmare for Ukraine

Ukraine is experiencing a logistical nightmare in supplying Western weapons to its troops on the front line.

This was reported in the “Wall Street Journal” (WSJ).

Now, more modern and more effective Western artillery guns with a long range are entering the fighting. Mastering them, however, turns out to be a serious problem, since the different models are ship in small batches.

“The current approach, where each country transfers batteries in parts, is quickly becoming a logistical nightmare for Ukrainian forces, as each battery requires a separate training, support and logistics system“, noted the Royal Institute of Armaments in London.

Today, the Ukrainian armed forces use M777 howitzers from the USA, Australia and Canada, as well as self-propelled artillery such as Caesar from France, PzH 2000 from Germany, American M109 and AHS Krab from Poland.

“None of these systems have anything to do with each other… Ammunition should be interchangeable, etc. But they’re not,” emphasizes expert Jack Watling.

Meanwhile, Rand Corp. analyst Scott Boston notes that Ukraine didn’t just get different types of weapons. She needs to learn how to deal with them as well to maintain them in a short period of time.

“When you move to non-Soviet platforms, you have to deal with a lot of things that weren’t in place before. A lot of the Soviet legacy is machines thatfix with hammer and wrench, brute force, grease and prayer“, he adds.
